Rob: “We are making some new work to perform in a gallery residency. This situation gives us another way to look at the relationship of performance and public. We wish to make live art with reduced expectations and heightened awareness. We are trying to make unexpected movement work on a modest human scale, close up as a live event in a gallery. We hope to make performances for every viewer who stops by during the afternoon, as well as give two performances from our repertoire at 4 and 6 pm. We’ll also play with an ‘etalage’ effect by doing movement performances every night of the residency from 11-12 midnight, visible from outside of the gallery on the street. To help me I have a group of artists from Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Argentina, Hungary, Mexico and Brazil with whom I have worked the past years. We will have an enjoyable time performing for the New York viewer.”

For the piece ON THE BALCONY Rob List has invited Mexican performance artist Melissa Cisneros and Hungarian choreographer Olivia Reschovsky to create solo movement works for the space. Visitors for ON THE BALCONY are led into a specially created room for a five-minute movement performance that occurs just at the periphery of the visitor’s sight. ON THE BALCONY is about the limits of the gaze, and the speed with which our thoughts attach judgments and narratives to what we see.
“We, only, can see death; the free animal
has its decline in back of it, forever,
and God in front, and when it moves, it moves
already in eternity, like a fountain.”
- From Rilke the Eighth Duino Elegy
